Govardhan Asrani, popularly known as Asrani, is a legendary Indian actor and director whose Bollywood career spans over five decades. Born on 1 January 1940, Asrani has appeared in over 350 Hindi films, excelling in lead, supporting, comedic, and character roles. His portrayal of the eccentric jailer in Sholay remains iconic, alongside his appearances in 25 films with Rajesh Khanna between 1972 and 1991.
Asrani’s journey in the film industry began after graduating from the Film Institute in Pune in 1966. He made his debut with the film Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyan (1967) and gained recognition with supporting roles in Mere Apne and Satyakam (1969). During the 1970s, he became one of the most sought-after comedians, delivering memorable performances in films like Chupke Chupke, Rafoo Chakkar, and Balika Badhu. He won two Filmfare Awards for Best Comedian for Aaj Ki Taaza Khabar (1974) and Balika Badhu (1977).
Asrani also explored directing, helming the critically acclaimed Chala Murari Hero Banne (1977). While he played the lead in Gujarati films during the 1970s and 1980s, his roles in Hindi cinema transitioned to supporting characters and comedic parts. He was part of the famous comedic trio with Kader Khan and Shakti Kapoor during the 1980s and 1990s.
In the 2000s, Asrani featured in modern comedies like Hera Pheri, Malamaal Weekly, and Bhagam Bhag, further cementing his legacy as a versatile actor. Beyond films, he acted in the popular web series Permanent Roommates and appeared in television serials like Partners Trouble Ho Gayi Double.
